Yamile Anaid Navarro Luna

Dancer, choreographer and dance educator Yamile Anaid Navarro Luna is a versatile and pioneering dance artist whose work encompasses contemporary dance, choreography and education. Over the past ten years, she has created a diverse body of work that combines cultural perspectives and pushes the boundaries of movement and sound.

Born in vibrant Mexico City and now based in the charming city of Dresden, Yamile has built a reputation for imaginative and profound productions that explore existential themes. Her notable works include ‘Was wenn, Einmal Mensch einmal...’ (2014), ‘Whispering Widows’ (2018), ‘1670 HERZ’ (2021) and ‘Phonetic Chills’ (2023), each showcasing her unique approach to combining movement, voice and live music.

An avid collaborator, Yamile has worked with various artists from different disciplines. Her collaborations include partnerships with composer Daniel Williams, Tunisian-born artist Rahma Ben Fredj and renowned directors such as Gerda König and Ulf Langheinrich. She is also a member of the artistic teams of ‘Past Continuous’ and ‘SLOGANS’ and works regularly with Katrin Meingast, the artistic director of Cantiere1234.

Yamile's work is recognised for its profound exploration of the human experience, often focusing on themes such as the afterlife, cultural perceptions of death, the human condition and the complex connection between voice and body. Her choreographies range from abstract neoclassical pieces to thought-provoking narratives, always subtly or strongly emphasising the integration of movement and sound.

As a teacher, Yamile is particularly keen to promote young talent. She co-directed the Young Dance Company at the JKS (2023-2024) and is a guest choreographer for the modern dance company at Öh-Töne. Her teaching experience extends to various groups, including workshops for people with and without disabilities and people with a migrant background.

Yamiles versatility as a performer allows her to switch seamlessly between different styles, from pointe work to Latin American inspired movement to abstract movement. This adaptability is evident in her performances in productions such as ‘TRANZ-/-FLEXION’ (2013), ‘Transitions of Identity’ (2015), ‘Pirate Cabaret’ (2017) and ‘MOVEMENT L’ (2023).

Throughout her career, Yamile has been an active member of the dance community. She was a board member of TanzNetzDresden (2020-2024) and is a member of Dancersconnect, a German non-profit organisation. Her commitment to personal growth led her to complete the Proctor Gallagher Institute's ‘Thinking into Results’ programme and today she is a success consultant at Diamond Mind Consulting.

Yamile holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Palucca University of Dance in Dresden (2012) and a Professional Degree in Classical Dance from the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona (2009). She continues her training and has recently obtained a 4Pointe certification (2024).

As she continues to develop as an artist, Yamile Anaid Navarro Luna remains committed to creating visionary performances that challenge and inspire audiences, while contributing to the development of the next generation of dancers.

This workshop delves into the symbiotic relationship between voice and movement and allows participants to experience how their own voice and the voices of others can profoundly influence the expression and movement of their bodies. Through a combination of guided improvisation, games and unique exercises, participants will discover the potential of their voice as a powerful tool for movement exploration.

Workshop structure:
- Introduction: Setting the context and intentions, focussing on the connection between voice and movement.
- Voice & body warm-up: preparing the body and voice for deeper exploration and activation of the senses.
- Exploring the fascinating world of letters: Discovering how individual sounds and letters influence movement and expression.
- Guided improvisation and games: Interactive activities that encourage creativity, spontaneity and the connection between body and voice.
- Enhancing the moving power of the voice with the microphone: Using the microphone to explore how amplified sound dynamics can change body response in movement.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to use their voice as an integral part of their movement practice and be ready to share their explorations in a public presentation.

Who is this workshop for?
Whether an experienced performer or someone just beginning to explore their voice, this workshop is for anyone who wants to discover their true, powerful voice. It is an open invitation for those who are curious about the interplay of vocal expression and physical movement.
